Charity auction to help East Africa food crisis

Over 9 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in East Africa. Millions of children are hungry, thirsty and desperate. They are in danger of becoming critically malnourished and, without help, many in the worst hit areas could die. Not having enough food has severe consequences which affects the child for the rest of his or her life. It significantly increases the likelihood of premature death, and those who do survive are at much greater risk from a variety of afflictions including heart disease, diabetes and kidney damage, and are far less able to withstand infection.

Life is Art is starting a new charity auction to raise money for Save the Children´s effort in East Africa. Anny Langer and Annailo have donated two photos for this auction.

Anny Langer – Norway
Høst i Oslo

Annailo – Norway
“Blue hour”

(Both photographs are size 30×40 cm. The auction will stay open for 10 days.)

You can place your bids HERE, and ALL proceeds will be donated to Save the Children. We also ask for your help to spread the word about the auction on twitter and Facebook. Remember that every dollar counts for a child in need!

You can also donate money directly to help children in East Africa at savethechildren.org

Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that

“If one man alone can show so much hate, imagine all the love and humanity a whole nation can give.”

The world is grieving with the victims of the terror attacks in Oslo and Utøya, Norway, their friends and their families. <3

Today we are all Norwegians

Our hearts go out to the Norwegian people and those who are affected by the attacks in Oslo and at Utøya.

So far, 91 people are confirmed dead – most of them being young, political engaged people at a peaceful summer camp.

As former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt said: “Today we are all Norwegians”.

This is a time for unity and love, not hatred and fear.

Somalia: malnutrition brings children to the brink of death

The nutritional state of children under five years of age in central and southern Somalia is a cause for great alarm.

Levels of malnutrition have reached a new peak and are currently the highest in the world, said the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today. In some parts of Somalia, the number of children with severe acute malnutrition has almost doubled since March.

“A dramatic increase in cases of malnutrition can be observed even in the Bay and Lower Shabelle regions, usually described as the country’s breadbaskets, where nearly 11 per cent of children under five suffer from severe acute malnutrition,” said Andrea Heath, the ICRC’s economic-security coordinator for Somalia.

The ICRC assessment includes data from 39 clinics and 18 outpatient therapeutic feeding centres. The facilities are run by the Somali Red Crescent Society with support from the ICRC.

Here are some thoughts from Annailo:

Lights on or off?

There were a lot of discussions going on around the time of The Earth Hour in March. Some were consistently against it, since “it wouldn´t help Mother Earth to turn the lights off for ONE hour”. Which is true, it won´t. But the whole idea was to awaken engagement for our planet, and spread awareness of the environmental challenges we are facing. No matter if you turned the lights off, or if you protested by keeping them on because “you would rather turn them off all other days of the year” – then mission accomplished.

My question is pretty simple. Today is one of those many other days of the year. Do you keep your lights on?

Annailo

How would you feel if someone turned you on

- and then left?
